Our first day as you can see was very dull and wet.
Standing on the steps at the front of the Vatican.
The centre of the Piazza is dominated by a 25.5m tall red granite obelisk which dates from the 13th Century BC. This obelisk was originally brought to Rome from Egypt in 35 AD by Emperor Caligula and was moved to the current site in 1586 by the engineer Domenico Fontana during the rule of Pope Sixtus V. This task was an enormous undertaking requiring 900 men, 150 horses and 47 purpose-built cranes to complete. On the top of the obelisk was a guilt ball that was thought to contain the ashes of Julius Caesar. When opened, the orb was found to contain nothing but dust and replaced with an iron cross which now oversees St. Peter´s Square.

This is one of the "must-see" places. I cant wait to see the rest of this series.
Tracy: Thanks you must get there one day if you can it's well worth it
Sorry for the delayed reply, had now power yesterday!:-(
Lovely, albeit wet, scene, Tracy.
Love the way you have captured the moment of the miraculous parting of the clouds to allow passage of the winged chariot bearing Moses [tour leader] and his people [tour ticket holders] on their trip to the promised land [return flight to Houston, Texas, where they all live]. I wonder at the original purpose of the big rock finger, at the time it was first documented 3300 years back...was there any description of that?
Tracy: No I did not see any but would love to have seen them move it from Eygpt to Rome.
Had no power yesterday sorry for the delayed reply :-(
LOL, the popes were always good at figuring out which treasures to appropriate. I like their taste in lawn ornaments
