The Pantheon is a magnificent ancient temple in Rome that was later converted into the church of Santa Maria ad Martyres. Dating from 125 AD, this is the most complete ancient building in Rome and one of the city's most spectacular sights.
Until the 20th century, the Pantheon was the largest concrete structure in the world. Michelangelo studied its great dome before starting work on the dome of St. Peter's Basilica.
The Pantheon was dedicated to pan theos, "all the gods." When it became a church, it was dedicated to the Virgin Mary and all the martyrs.
The Pantheon is the burial place of several important Italians (including the artist Raphael), and it remains an active church. It is a major tourist destination and a popular place for weddings.

It is made out of concrete? I didn't realize that that was a viable building material 2000 years ago. Astonishing!
Tracy: They used various materials Martin,I was suprised too. Thanks
It looks massive. Yeah is it made of concrete? I bet a grandiose wedding should be held here.
Tracy: Yes Maria it was concrete and various other materials, as you will see inside tomorrow
Thanks
Great view, we had to study art-history in school, in the buildings they used marble, there was enough of it...I love your POV, is shows how impressive, majestic this is, thanks for the information with it, can we hire you as a guide if the 3M's are going on a tour??
Tracy: I will be the tour guide for sure musketeer, it goes with out saying
Thanks for your lovely comment mijn vriend. Lunch was great caught up with old friends
Put a few potted palms in there, along with some comfortable rattan furniture...a beer fridge over there on the left, and a selection of red wines on the right...I could be comfortable there for a few hours with a couple of good friends!
I wonder if that has already been tried? [concrete! Yikes...I always thought it was sandstone!]
Tracy: I think that may have been done several times a day in this square
Thanks for your comment
Great picture of a great building. Personally I find the red lettered comment interfering with the picture - I have to scroll it out of sight to take a good look at the picture.
I think I see the neighbour's wife there with another guy
Tracy: Louis as soon as I read your comment I changed the colour to white
Only the one Louis she must be slipping up
Great POV showing very well the size of it!
Thanks for your informative comment Tracy.

Your building shots are really rather good Tracy - you have captured the magnificence of the structure very well.
Ingrid
Tracy: Thanks for your kind comment Ingird, I appreciate it very much
The buildings are lovely in Rome
I was surprised about the concrete too. I looked it up and it is the dome that is concrete at its' base with the upper part made from pumice so as to be lighter. See what you've done Tracy..made me start doing homework!! Oh and the columns are granite!
(Nasty little swot Phillips)
Tracy: You will have to stay behind after class Bill if you don't pay attention and do your homework!!!
LOL keep it up
I really like this ... the tourists in that thin layer at the bottom works well for me. richard

An incredible example of Roman building techniques and using concrete.
Tracy: Thanks Chad I was amazed just by the size of the buildings and how much work went into building them all those years ago,and with out the tools and technology we have today.
Long trip, not much sleep and now I'm wide awake in the middle of the night. But it was worth it, because some of todays sc's have great shots up. This is very impressive, it shows it's age beautifully.
