Built, as was the Elian Bridge in front, by the Emperor Hadrian (117-138) as a Mausoleum for himself and his successors, it was completed by Antoninus Pius in 139. In 271, the Emperor Aurelian incorporated the pile into the defence system he designed: it lost its function as a tomb to become a fortress.
In 1277 it was occupied by Nicholas II who connected it to the Vatican by the famous corridor, a safety passage which runs along the top of the encircling wall of the Vatican. Hencefort, it remained under the control of the Popes who used it as a fortress, to impress, but also as a prison and a place for torture.

So magnificent; you must have brought more than 5 gig. Too much beauty, I may not know where to shoot.
Tracy: LOL Maria, I took 1,800 shots in total with two camera's.
Thanks for your comment
When I read the information with it, I only can say.....'friendly guys those Popes'
great capture, it must have been a magnificent view all those statues on both sides of the road. LOL at M'roy....I bet you brought more than 5 gig.
Tracy: They never captured and tortured me though Musketeer LOL
The statues were very impressive on the bridge. You get a better idea tomorrow. 5 gig may not be enough!!!LOL
Pretty impressive, even if not beautiful, construction.Surely those sculptures were not from the Hadrian era...they look more like 16th century.
Really enjoyed your mini history lesson here, Tracy.
Tracy: I thought I should have been a teacher!!!LOL
Thanks Ray
Very impressive building. I like the perspective heading to it through the statues.
Thanks for the history lesson.
Tracy: Thanks Richard
I fouind you write-up as interesting as the picture, Tracy. (very).
Tracy: Cheers Chad;-)
I came here when I lived in Florence and it's a very impressive sight. Wonderful capture Tracy.
Tracy: Thank you so much Scarlet
This is a very imposing looking building and looks well preserved. Interesting history behind it. I like the rich red colour against the grey sky.
Ingrid
Tracy: Thanks Ingrid for your comment.
Can't beat a bit of torture to keep the faithful in line. Interesting stuff Tracy. Looks like the weather was a bit iffy!
Tracy: LOL Bill. The weather was wet and cold and more wet
Good one Tracy! I especially like your point of view here.

Tracy: Thanks Vintage for your valued comment
It is a strange structure, no? But I feel the immensity in your good photo.
Tracy: Ruth IMHO this building is horrible but to some it might be lovely. The statues were what really caught my eye and I thought the background was better than in the other direction. Giving a better composition over all.
Thanks for your comment
Thanks for sharing this interesting bit of history.
Tracy: Your welcome Martin, and thank you for your comment
could you have not told that lot to clear off while you took this Tracy
Tracy: I did shout at them Tim, but they were all foreigners and did not understand me, can you believe that LOL.
Thanks for the comment
I had a little grin at the typo 'Hencefort' - in one slip you said 'from here onwards it is a fortress'
Great picture - you have lost a little sharpness upfront with the focus on the fortress. Use a higher f-stop or what I do sometimes is to shoot on landscape that provides much deeper focus.
Tracy: Nice to know you are paying attention Louis
Thanks for the advice on the shot, and the comment
It works well - being slightly off center was a good choice.
Tracy: Thanks Jewlya
I almost love this structure better than St. Peter's, Tracy, but you didn't hear that from me. I can see it out of my left eye (St. Peter's), but THIS is the one I love, with that great bridge of statues out in the open. I LOVE that I recognize these pictures of yours as though I was there with you!
Tracy: I liked the interior but the exterior was plain to me and I was not taken in that much with it. As for the bridge I LOVED it.
Ginnie could you imagine the fun time we would have if the musketeers went on a photo weekend.!!!!!! No matter where I am or go you are always with me in spirit.
Very nice building you show us here!
Tracy: Glad you like it Robbie, thanks for the comment
